15/02/2019: New Research Staff
The Institute welcomes Daniel Teubl as a new research assistant. Mr. Teubl completed his Bachelor's and Master's degree at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. He wrote his Master's thesis at the Institute for Computer Science and Control at Hungarian Academy of Science - MTA-SZTAKI - in the topic of Sampled Control Design for Linear Parameter Varying Dystems. Mr. Teubl has already been working closely together with us on the FLEXOP project as an embedded software developer at SZTAKI. At our Institute, his activities will focus on embedded systems for UAVs.
01/02/2019: New Research Staff
The Institute welcomes Tim Klaproth as a new research assistant. Mr. Klaproth completed his Bachelor's and Master's studies at the Technical University of Munich. In his Master's thesis at our chair, he dealt with the design of a propulsion system for a multirotor interceptor UAV. His work at the institute will focus on system architectures of unmanned aerial vehicles.

Successful final presentation of the practical course Air Transport Scenarios on the topic of "Airline Revenues 2035+"
This year's final presentation of the practical course "Air Transport Scenarios" took place last Thursday at Bauhaus Luftfahrt under the heading "Airline Revenues 2035+". The student team was able to impressively demonstrate its expertise in strategic planning in aviation, which it acquired last summer semester. The students presented three different scenarios for the future cost and revenue development of airlines and the resulting implications, followed by a lively discussion with more than 40 guests in the audience.
Special thanks go to the experts from industry (Airbus, Munich Airport, Diehl Aviation) and research (Bauhaus Luftfahrt e.V.), who supported our students with their expert knowledge in creating their scenarios. Planning is already underway for next year’s practical course "Air Transport Scenarios".
It will be organized in the summer semester of 2019, again as a cooperation project between the TU Munich (Institute of Aircraft Design), Airbus and Bauhaus Luftfahrt. Interested students please contact Johannes Michelmann or Axel Becker (Airbus / axel.becker at airbus.com).
11.09.2018 Studentenwettbewerb zu Ehren des Erstflugs des Senkrechtstartflugzeug Dornier Do-31
„Gegen 21 werden die Mitglieder der Wasserwacht Nonnenhorn alarmiert und sammeln sich am Hafen. Die Rettungsleitstelle informiert die Rettungsmannschaft, dass nach einem Windsurfer gesucht wird. Der Surfer war vom Ufer aus beobachtet worden, wie er versuchte, vor Wasserburg gegen den auffrischenden Westwind anzukreuzen. Nach wiederholten Stürzen ins Wasser stand er nicht mehr auf…“.
Diese Meldung ist glücklicherweise nur erfunden, sie bildet jedoch die Grundlage für die Aufgabenstellung für den Studentenwettbewerb zum 50. Jubiläum des Erstflugs des Senkrechtstarters Dornier Do-31. Drei Teams stellten sich der Herausforderung, ein senkrechtstartendes UAV zur Unterstützung der Wasserwacht Nonnenhorn bei der Vermisstensuche zu entwerfen, zu bauen und seine Fähigkeiten in einer Flugerprobung unter Beweis zu stellen. Die Jury bestand aus Vertretern der Anwender (Karl-Heinz Höpfl), der Industrie (Florian Seibel), des Verbands der unbemannten Luftfahrt (Uwe Nortmann), der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrt (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Mirko Hornung) und der Forschung (Sebastian Köberle).
Der Lehrstuhl für Luftfahrtsysteme übernahm weiterhin die Erstellung des Reglements und war an der Durchführung und Bewertung der Wettbewerbsflüge beteiligt. Als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter und Mitglied der Wasserwacht Nonnenhorn entwickelte Sebastian Köberle das Reglement basierend auf einer vorher erstellten Studienarbeit von Christoph Wimmer. Bei der Durchführung der Wettbewerbsflüge organisierte und koordinierte er die wettbewerbsseitigen Aspekte sowie notwendige Infrastruktur.
„Aus der Vergangenheit lernen, mit Blick in die Zukunft das Machbare für die Gegenwart entwickeln.“ Mit diesen Worten fasste Camilo Dornier das Motto des Studierendenwettbewerbs zusammen. Diesem Anspruch wurden die Teams mit ihren drei völlig unterschiedlichen Fluggeräten und einem beeindruckendem Sportsgeist gerecht!

09/01/2018: New Technical Staff
The newest member of the Institute of Aircraft Design is Fabian Wiedemann as Technical Manager. Mr. Wiedemann is a trained composite toolmaker and specialized in light aircraft construction after his apprenticeship. He spent the last 10 years in Asia, where he was responsible for the co-development and manufacture of unmanned aerial vehicles in composites. Among other things, his activities included their integration and also as a test pilot. Mr. Wiedemann was an enthusiastic model maker at a young age. Presently he still pursues this hobby intensively.

Die diesjährige DLR/Nasa-Design Challenge befasste sich mit dem Thema "umweltfreundliche Fliegen von Morgen". Wir gratulieren dem TU-Studenten-Team zu ihrem siegreichen visionären Entwurf "The 'eRay' Aircraft Concept".
08/01/2018: New Research Staff
The Institute of Aircraft Design welcomes Johannes Michelmann as a new research assistant. Mr. Michelmann completed his Master’s studies at the Technical University of Munich. In his Master’s Thesis in cooperation with mb + Partner he dealt with the design of the drivetrain of a ground-based launch and landing system for UAV. For his Term Project at our teaching chair he investigated an increased route fidelity modelling in an evolutionary fleet model. His activities will focus on scenario analysis, future trends and fleet modelling in aviation.
14.06.2018 Exkursion zum Flughafen München
Die diesjährige Exkursion zum Flughafen München am vergangenen Donnerstag im Rahmen der Vorlesung „Operationelle Aspekte der Luftfahrt“ war ein voller Erfolg. Höhepunkte waren unter anderem der Besuch der Flughafenfeuerwehr, die für uns eine nasse Vorstellung geliefert hat und sogar einen Einsatz fahren musste während wir dort waren, sowie der Besuch der Verkehrszentrale und der Vorfeldkontrolle im Tower, die uns einen neuen Blickwinkel auf den Flughafen gezeigt haben. Auch der Vortrag von Jörg Simon von der Verkehrsleitung am Vormittag war sehr interessant und hat spannende Einblicke in den täglichen Betrieb eines Flughafens geliefert. Vielen Dank für die Teilnahme und das Interesse!

The Institute of Aircraft Design welcomes Thomas Seren as a new research assistant. Mr. Seren completed his bachelor's degree at the PFH Göttingen. Afterwards he was working for four years at Airbus, where he was working on the sizing of fuselage structures. He completed his master's degree in aerospace engineering at the Technical University of Munich. In his master's thesis at our institute he dealt with the design of electrical VTOL UAVs. His activities at our institute will focus on concepts and design of UAVs.

The Institute of Aircraft Design welcomes Fabian Sturm as a new research assistant. Mr. Sturm completed his Bachelor's and Master's studies at the Technical University of Munich and in his Master's thesis at the Institute of Lightweight Design he dealt with shape optimization of integral hinges for a morphing leading edge wing. Alongside his study he was head of design of the latest sailplane development Mü 31 of Akaflieg München. After he graduated he was working in the aerospace industry for almost one and a half year and calculated aircraft loads. His activities will focus on the aerodynamic and structural design of wings with variable geometry.

The Institute of Aircraft Design welcomes Johannes Achleitner as a new research assistant. Mr. Achleitner completed his diploma at the Technical University of Munich. In his diploma thesis he focused on Finite Element Analysis of braided carbon fiber parts. Alongside his study he was head of design of the latest sailplane development Mü31 of Akaflieg Munich. He transferred from Laboratory of Product Development and Lightweight design to the Institute of Aircraft Design. His research focuses on aerodynamic and structural design of wings with variable geometry leading edge systems.
02/27/2018: Static Groundtests of the FLEXOP-Demonstrator
St. Martin / Ried im Innkreis (A) - On the 27th of February 2018 static ground tests were carried out with the first manufactured pair of wings for the flying FLEXOP demonstrator at the research lab of project partner FACC assisted by the German Aerospace Cente (DLR). Discrete loads were introduced by external masses and the deformation measured by using a laser tracking system. The measurement results are compared against numerical simulations of this experimental set-up in order to ensure the quality of the structural model and, if necessary, to be able to take corrective corrections. First samples showed good agreement between calculation and experiment. In the coming weeks, the second pair of wings at FACC will be finalized, designed with a special aeroelastic tayloring approach. This design is intended to reduce the loads on the structure due to gusts or maneuvers through an allevating effect.

The new member our Institutes is Julius Bartasevicius. Mr. Bartasevicius completed his master's degree at the University of Glasgow (Aerospace Engineering). During his successful Master's thesis at the Institute of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, he was able to collect experience at TUM in the field of "Delta wing post-stall flow manipulation by unsteady, spattially changing leading-edge blowing". At our Institute, Flight Testing will become his field of expertise.

The Institute of Aircraft Design is pleased to welcome Anna Elena Scholz as a new research assistant. Ms. Scholz holds a bachelor's degree from RWTH Aachen University and holds a master's degree in aeronautical engineering from Imperial College London. In her Master's thesis, she dealt with the analysis and evaluation of multifunctional fiber composite structures in electric aircraft. Her work at the institute will focus on hybrid electric propulsion systems.

The Institute welcomes Sebastian Oberschwendtner as a new scientific assistant. Mr. Oberschwendtner completed his Bachelor's and Master's studies at the Technical University of Munich and in his Master's thesis at our chair dealt with the electromagnetic compatibility of subsystems. His activities will focus on UAV design.
09/15/2017: AKAflieg Mü-31 Maiden Flight
Königsdorf - After long years of research, development, construction and testing, the Akademische Fliegergruppe München was able to launch the latest prototype Mü31 for its first flight on Friday, 15.09.2017. The optimization towards a low drag wing- fuselage joint was the main motivation during the development of Mü31. The weather conditions turned out to be ideal in contrast to the previous days and so the Mü31 took off shortly after 13.00 clock, in an aircraft towing into a white-blue, late summer sky. In addition to basic flight maneuvers, the pilot Johannes Achleitner was also able to circle in the thermals. The first flight ended after more than an hour without any incident with a butter soft landing. We congratulate AKAflieg on this milestone and wish a further smooth flight test!

09/05/2017: Presentation of the SAGITTA-Demonstrators at the DLRK 2017
As part of this year's German Aerospace Congress (DLRK), the recently maidened SAGITTA demonstrator was presented. On Tuesday, September 5th, congress visitors were able to see the prototype and find out about the research project at a joint display standby of AIRBUS and the LLS. In July 2017, the unmanned aerial vehicle completed its first flight on the Overberg Testing Range in South Africa.
08/19/2017: First Place in DLR-NASA-Design-Challenge
Under the supervision of the LLS & LLB, the student group of Christian Decher, Daniel Metzler and Soma Varga won the first place in the nationwide competition Joint DLR / NASA Design Challenge 2017 for an efficient low-emission transport aircraft with the innovative Design urban liner. Over the course of the design process lasting several months, the Munich student team designed, calculated and optimized an innovative aircraft based on a hybrid propulsion architecture and active laminar flow systems. Of particular importance was the exploitation of synergies between the main disciplines structure, aerodynamics and propulsion system in favor of the flight performance of the urban liner. In addition, the impact of parameter sensitivities as well as the feasibility of new technologies in terms of compliance with international aviation regulations has always been considered. TUM participated in the DLR / NASA competition with a total of three student groups. Among the other participants, a study for a supersonic business jet with reduced sonic boom (MUC-D: Can Araz, Ugur Batir, Deniz Bezgin, Mert Civaner) and another study for an efficient subsonic transport plane (E-Glider: Robin Wachsmann, Simon Taenzler, Florian Seybold). In September 2017, the winning team will travel to the United States Aerospace Agency (NASA). The Institure thanks the students for their efforts and wishes them all the best for the future!
